Cancer Prevention: The Critical Role of Micronutrients
Cancer incidence and mortality has increased dramatically since the inception of the "War on Cancer" in the 1970s. Consequently, many medical researchers are now recommending a change in focus in this war from treatment to prevention.
This presentation will explore the biological processes involved in carcinogenesis and the roles common micronutrient deficiencies play in these processes. Specific areas of discussion will include:
- DNA damage caused by vitamin/mineral deficiencies that mimics damage caused by ionizing radiation
- The significant role abnormal methylation plays in the process of carcinogenesis and the appropriate nutrients to optimize methylation
- Micronutrient effects on DNA repair, immunosurveillance and other critical systems that protect cells from becoming cancerous.
The goal of the program is to help the clinician appreciate the significant impact proper micronutrient status has in regulating the numerous mechanisms involved in carcinogenesis. This information will support clinicians in helping their patients reduce their risks for cancer through scientifically current nutritional information and guidance.
Alan Jeans, DC is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Chemistry. He graduated summa cum laude from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1982. In 1985 he earned board certification in Clinical Nutrition with the American Chiropractic Board of Nutrition. After nearly 14 years of private practice, an automobile accident forced his early retirement. The accident eventually led him back to researching basic nutritional issues. He has invested his last 5 years of 'retirement' studying the roles 'simple' nutrients play in the development and management of chronic diseases.
Vis Medicatix Naturae: Respecting our Naturopathic Core in the Face of
Contemporary Health Issues such as Environmental Toxicity and Resistant Infections
This will be a discussion of the attendees facilitated by Michael Bergkamp, ND, regarding the importance of vital force and nature cure in the context of environmental toxicity issues and modern medicine. Dr. Michael Bergkamp will present some general observations on the topic and plant a few seeds so the entire group can participate in a lively discourse.
This discussion, facilitated by Michael Bergkamp, ND, will review some of the ancient precepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine in light of the new challenges found in day to day practice. Nature and nature cures have been the guiding force of our medicine and yet there is now a new set of environmental conditions that nature is presenting to us both as living conscious beings and as healers. This presentation will be an invitation to openly discuss and debate this new challenging world in the context of natural medicine.
Michael Bergkamp, ND is starting his 25th year of practice in Montana and has spent many of these 25 years working to establish and expand the model of naturopathic medicine in Montana. Dr. Bergkamp has traveled to Asia twice to study Traditional Chinese Medicine and finds that model very helpful in his practice. Dr. Bergkamp is the present chair of the Alternative Health Care Board.
